"Rebetiko music" in a few words is a urban Greek music (with different styles) from cities and especially ports, such as Smyrna, Constantinople, Syros, Thessaloniki, Piraeus. Because the dating of the beginnings of "rebetiko" is another intractable issue I will just say that, some place the beginning of it in Byzantium, others in the middle of the 19th century, while others in the interwar period. It is extremely popular here in Greece and has a very important place in the heart of almost every Greek.
